Karen Stirrett earned her degrees in biology (BS) and genetics (PhD) from Wake Forest University and the University of Georgia, respectively. She was trained in the field of molecular genetics with a concentration on the genetics of microorganisms. The knowledge gained during her PhD led to successful postdoctoral research projects at Weill Cornell Medical College and the University of Georgia in drug discovery and development of green technologies, respectively. After nine years and 10 publications in peer-reviewed journals, she left the research world to pursue a career in teaching. Stirrett has taught for nine years at the college level, with five of those years as a collegiate traveling professor of biology for the University of Maryland Global Campus in the European and Asian divisions. Before joining Tulane as a professor of practice in the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, she spent a year teaching advanced level biology courses to high achieving high school students at the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts.
